Automotive cybersecurity for commercial vehicles: Building in security from the very outset

HEIDENHEIM, GERMANY. UNECE regulations R155 and R156, along with ISO/SAE 21434, have fundamentally altered the requirements for cybersecurity in modern commercial vehicles. For vehicle manufacturers and automotive suppliers, cybersecurity is now a key component of product development and an important prerequisite for obtaining type approval for many vehicle platforms.

Since establishing a dedicated cybersecurity team in 2022, Driventic has been working on systematically integrating cybersecurity aspects into the development of its products and solutions. The meanwhile independent company uses its experience from the development of control units and drive systems for commercial vehicles to support OEMs, for example, with the integration of cybersecurity requirements in development projects – incorporating cybersecurity from the very outset.

The development of control units at Driventic is geared strictly towards the requirements of ISO/SAE 21434. As a result, all relevant cybersecurity aspects are considered and compliance with applicable safety standards is guaranteed across the entire product life cycle – from the initial concept through development, volume production and operation to the final decommissioning of the commercial vehicle.

The development of control units is based on the provisions of ISO/SAE 21434. As a result, cybersecurity requirements, risk analyses, and the documentation of security-related decisions are incorporated into the development process in a structured way.

With the help of threat analysis and risk assessments (TARA), potential threats are identified and suitable protective measures determined. This supports the development of secure vehicle functions and electronic systems.

Cybersecurity requirements are already taken into account during the development of hardware and software. The technological priorities include secure flash, secure diagnostics, cryptographic algorithms, and protecting hardware.
