The logical next step in a proven development concept: Driventic launches the new VEDS 2.2

HEIDENHEIM, GERMANY. Even more compact, lighter, and versatile: Driventic expands its product range and launches the new electric drive system VEDS 2.2 on the market. The new system builds on the proven, integrated VEDS system approach and is specifically designed for a range of applications – for new vehicles or retrofit solutions.

The VEDS 1.5 has been impressing the market since 2025 with its new drive inverter system (DIS) including integrated diagnosis and management unit (DMU), an automotive-compliant connector system for fast installation, and a more compact and lighter design. It also boasts a peak output of up to 390 kW and complies with all relevant automotive cybersecurity standards based on ISO 21434.

Three main components directly connected to one another

Driventic has drawn on this integrated system approach for the VEDS 2.2 and has taken it to the next logical level, including by optimizing the torque-to-power ratio for use in heavy vehicles. But that’s not all: With a low total weight of just 275 kg, the drive unit is even more compact and lightweight, without sacrificing the necessary performance. In addition, Driventic plans to use the VEDS 2.2 as part of its global portfolio strategy to tap into new markets and vehicle segments, e.g., HD buses, coaches, and MD trucks.

Basically, the VEDS 2.2 consists of three main components directly connected with one another to create a compact unit: A powerful high-speed EVO 390-type motor, the new inverter, and a single-stage planetary gear unit. Moreover, an electrically-powered oil pump with integrated oil filter ensures the necessary lubrication and cooling of motor and gear unit.

Fewer interfaces simplify vehicle integratio

The vehicle-side interfaces have been reduced to a minimum and clearly structured to simplify vehicle integration. These include the cooling water connections on the motor and the electrical connections on the inverter (power and signal cable), as well as the signal connections on the gear unit (KITAS sensor).

The drive unit is mounted on the non-drive side of the engine and on both sides of the gear unit using defined flange surfaces with threaded holes. The frictional connection to the vehicle axle is produced using the KV180 output flange on the gear unit.

VEDS 2.2 as ideal basis for retrofit projects

Another especially practical feature that provides OEMs with planning certainty is that the rear axles from conventional, diesel-powered vehicles can be used without modification. This substantially reduces the system costs and also makes the VEDS 2.2 the ideal basis for retrofit projects, as there is no need for new investments in axle technology.

On the vehicle side, this means that all that is needed for operation are suitable high-voltage and 24 V batteries and a low-temperature refrigerant circuit with air-water heat exchanger. And thanks to its IP6K9K rating, the VEDS 2.2 is even ideal for the harsh operating conditions of commercial vehicle applications.

Broader portfolio strategy for global commercial vehicle market

“Our new VEDS 2.2 enables the simple electrification of various vehicle segments, including MD trucks. Because we aim to appeal to the global commercial vehicle market with as broad a portfolio as possible, and to further advance the shift to electric mobility in the entire vehicle fleet,” says Manuel Calero, Senior Vice President Product Management at Driventic.
